Color Your Life

Posted by: DL  /  Category: Life Matters

Anyone that really knows me well, knows that I’m a novice interior decorator.  For a long time, I considered taking this field of study, as my major in college, but never really took that step.

But, I’m a fanof color. I love to paint every room in the house a different color and plan a whole scheme around the color.  You’d be surprised how much color can effect your mood.

When living in an apartment, you’re pretty much at the mercy of the landlord, so you can’t really touch the walls or put up any cool curtains or anything like that, so the walls stay very plane and ugly looking.

The thing I miss the most about being a home owner is my chance to make a house a home.  Once I entered my home, all my worries fell by the wasteside and I was able to completely unwind.  I don’t really have that opportunity anymore, since we’re renting and I can’t really change any color decisions that the landlord has made.

So, if you are lucky enough to own your own home, don’t look past planning to color every room in the colors on the color wheel, to make it feel much more lived in and homey…

I’ll continue to sit here and dream of the day, we’ll be able to purchase our dreamhome and make it into something special.

Sick, Just Plane Sick!

Posted by: DL  /  Category: Family Matters, Health Matters, Life Matters

If you ask anybody, most people would say that they absolutely hate being sick.  The feeling of being miserable from: body aches to a stuffy/runny nose coughing, sneezing, wheezing, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, etc.

But, your own feeling of misery is quickly magnified when you see your child in that kind of anguish. It’s hard to describe the feeling of utter guilt that surges through a parents body when they see their child sick.  Most of the time, the germs the adult has brought into the home, causes one or both parents to become sick, then it swiftly shifts over to the child.

When children get sick, they usually become really cranky, clingy, and hard to please.  Then there’s those times when they’re so ill that their little chests get congested with phlem and when they cry (trying to complain, non-verbally) they end up gagging and then vomiting all the food they’ve recently had. It’s really a sad site.

Not only is it a nasty, stinky mess that a parent must deal with, but a very painful process to watch, when your child is in pain. That nurturing soul inside of every person, just jumps out to try and help a child in distress.

It’s important for every person to value their good health, because once they become ill, they wish it would soon be over, but once it is, they’re so caught up in their own lives, they don’t realize how much the illness was a blessing in disguise.

Insomnia

Every now and again a person’s normal routine is interrupted and they happen to fall victim to insomnia.  Insomnia is one of my least favorite incidences, and I can say that I truly despise it.

Either you’re too sick to sleep through the night, you’re woken up by a little person (your child), you can’t stop your mind from thinking about endless things (over and over), or you’re pained due to illness of some sort.

Tonight for instance, we rearranged my sons room, set up a new toddler bed that his Grandma bought him as a gift (yes, another bed), and figured he’d sleep well since he was very tired throughout the day. Well, guess again!

He slept and woke up every hour for the last few hours, and woke me up along with him. He eventually woke at 3:30 am, with no intention of returning to sleep.

Although I have a head cold, my head is stuffy and runny, as well as my mounting exhaustion due to lack of sleep, I really needed the extra sleep.

But, it seems as though he’ll stay sitting here in my lap forever, unless I put a stop to it.  Pretty soon once he’s gotten his wiggles out, I’ll plop him back in bed, and see if he’s willing to grant me some much needed sleep.  I need some measure of mercy to get through this cold, as well as everything else I mentioned.

Common advice for people who are having trouble sleeping is to drink warm milk (which I did for him), drink chamomile tea, take a warm bath, get comfortable before bedtime, dim the lights about one hour before bedtime, etc.  I did most of those things for him, and yet here we are.  I guess the teething is a factor as well.

Either way, I hate insomnia (be it mine or someone else’s in my family) if it alters MY sleep pattern!!

College, So Many Decisions to Make!

Posted by: DL  /  Category: All Postings, Educational Matters, Life Matters, Money Matters

Back in the old days, when there was no such thing as the internet, people used to go for hours on end, on a campus, to complete the tedious work involved in getting a college degree.

In fact, decades ago, even before that, it was a huge feat to have gotten a high school degree.  Then years later, a high school diploma alone was obsolete.

At that point, having an associates degree was something to strive for.  Then once enough people caught on and attained that goal, the bachelor’s degree became something that was highly sought after.

Since that time, the bachelor’s degree has been accomplished by many people, so now it is a common thing to have a bachelor’s degree, it’s no longer as important as it once was.

It seems like the tide is changing, yet again, and now the Master’s degree and Doctorate degree are something to strive for.

How easily we forget the past.  And all the experiences of generations long ago. But, with the coming of age, and the wave of the future, we must change with the times.

So, now that we’ve gone through all that, lets discuss what options we have.  Once you’ve decided what kind of degree you are planning on getting, how much you’re willing to spend, and how far from home you’re willing to travel, it’s time to decide HOW you wish to attain your degree.

Do you:

  • wish to get your degree through traditional, on campus, methods?
  • wish to be a self starter, and take online classes to achieve your degree and fit schooling into your busy schedule?
  • or take classes called credit by exam (which usually involves prepping for the tests by studying clip notes, paying the minimal fee for the test, and going to a campus and taking it. If you pass, then you don’t have to take the actual class which would have required weeks of hard work and dedication.)

I personally have done the first two, but I intend on getting to the third option, shortly.

Going to college campus when I was fresh out of high school, was an awesome experience for me, I learned a lot about myself, came out of my shell, to some degree and felt all the better for it.

Once I had graduated with my degree, worked in the field for years and then decided to go back to school, I decided I wanted to go online.  I was working full time, taking care of the usual responsibilities, as well as attending an online college.  It worked perfectly for me, because I studied when I fit it into my schedule and found the time.

I plan on going back to college, as soon as I can. As for right now, I’m searching for colleges that offer accredited online college degrees, that are affordable, prestigious and offer the degree that suits me.

Mind you, it may be quite hard to juggle writing articles for this site, my family life, writing my novels, and the usual stuff on top of getting an education, but what are the alternatives?

Shall I sit by and watch as everyone else gets a better job, gets paid more, lives better, while I whine and complain that I never got around to advancing myself?

No, for me- learning is living. You don’t stop learning until you’re dead.  So, in order to advance myself and my family (along with me), I must continue to pursue my education, and you should too!

Three Versions of the Truth

Posted by: DL  /  Category: Life Matters, Social Matters

I was pondering this very issue, not that long ago…

A relative and I were discussing a real life circumstance that recently happened and I mentioned, “How stupid can they be, believing only one side of the story? Don’t they know that there is three versions of the truth?”

See, there isn’t one version of the truth, or two versions of the truth, in all actuality there are three versions of the truth.  Three versions, you ask?

Well, let me break it down for you incase you haven’t figured it out on your own:

  1. One persons version (of what the events that took place)
  2. The other persons version of the truth (in their own personal view)
  3. And the actual truth (something that may not please both parties, but it’s 100% accurate)

It may not be that both parties are going out of their way to lie and make themselves look good, but they may have forgotten pertinent information that they are leaving out, “unintentionally”.

So, without sounding like a broken record, I’d say, “Never take one person version of the truth, always wait to hear all sides of the story before assuming anything.

Because there are quite a few tale-tellers out there that wish to look good and have people believe them, so they can look like the victim; but on the other hand, the other person involved in this dispute may feel the same way, but that they are the true victim in all this.

And then there are those times when you’ve heard all the versions and they just don’t add up, so you can just tell the other parties that you weren’t there and would prefer to stay neutral and an impartial person, and would rather not get involved. That’s usually a safe bet.  Both parties may not like to hear this, but it’s the best way to keep your nose out of things that just aren’t your business.
